Application (pt1)- The Basic Steps

This is part one in a series of short posts on the subject of application.

In basic terms, there are always at least 3 steps to applying any text. But sometimes, if it is an Old Testament passage, there are 4 (add step 2).

Step 1 - Study the text in its original context and establish its central meaning for back then.

Step 2 - Ask (if OT) how the central meaning carries over into the New Testament, or is modified?

Step 3 - Ask (whether OT or NT) what do we share in common with the original writer or readers and what are the differences between us?

Step 4 - Seek to apply the texts recommended belief or behaviour to the modern day situation, keeping in mind the perameters of Steps 2 and 3.

In the next post, I'm going to try to unpack step 4 which is often what we most struggle with.
