For those of you who are unfamiliar with SLOBS the idea is not that we slob out on leather couches but rather we get together to study the following weeks Down-to-Earth Bible passage for ourselves. We want to be faithful teachers of God’s word and so as leaders we seek to help each other understand and apply God’s words for ourselves. Simply SLOBS is the Senior Leaders Own Bible Study – its where we learn and grow.
Preparation
Learning and teaching the passage
Spending time alone studying the passage – this is the key. Those who lead SLOBS and those who then lead other small groups must understand the passage and be excited about it. It’s also an opportunity to foresee and difficulties, red herrings or blind alleys. Good leaders use the passage for fellowship, 1-1’s and teaching. This is not just a sly way of having less prep time – this is about swallowing oneself up in the passage – living it.

SLOBS is a ‘live’ study not just note-taking. It is the leader’s small group, where they are learning and applying: asking themselves questions like, “How should this change our view of God, our lives, challenge our evangelism?”
It’s a time, too, to help ensure they know all the side alleys and prepare them for debates. It is good to throw them a little theological bomb even if they don’t bring it up themselves. I need to ensure that group leaders are ready for the concerns that their group will throw at them.
